How the date is chosen
The evening of Phalguna Purnima, after Bhadra ends. If Bhadra ends before midnight, the dahan is after it; if Bhadra runs past midnight, the pradosh time is used — or the next evening, when Purnima lasts most of the next day.
About Holika Dahan
Phalguna Purnima evening: the Holika bonfire recalls Prahlad's faith. People walk around the fire and offer new grain and coconut. Traditionally it is lit in pradosh on Purnima, avoiding Bhadra.
